A Kiwi couple wanting to buy a new car say they've fallen victim to an elaborate eBay scam, costing them $10,000.

After enquiring through "an NZ selling platform" and liaising with what they thought was an eBay support email address, they say no red flags were raised - until the car never arrived.

Victim Jenna Norton publicly posted on Facebook explaining what happened, urging others not to make the same mistake.

Norton was hoping to upgrade to a safer car for her five-month-old daughter.

The couple received an email from support@ebaymotorsdeals.co.nz including documents, terms and conditions and payment instructions. Once the $10,000 was paid, the couple received an invoice with delivery details - but the car never arrived.

After contacting the seller and what they thought was eBay, the couple were told it was delayed due to an issue with the truck driver and they immediately demanded a refund.

They were told the refund would be completed within 48 hours, but the car was back for sale that night.

After enquiring, Norton was told that the car was available - but the seller was using a different email, name and reason for selling.

The bank, police and selling platform were notified immediately, but the couple are unsure whether they'll get their money back.

"Imagine if they scammed 10 people, that's $100,000," Norton said in the Facebook post.

"Who knows who else they've managed to take advantage of."

Norton says the bank and police told her this is one of the most well-done scams they've seen in a while.

"Be extra vigilant when purchasing online, these are rough times for everyone."
