The International Maritime Organization says the attack against its IT systems on 30 September ‘overcame robust security measures in place’.
A number of the IMO’s web-based services are currently unavailable, including its public website (www.imo.org) and internal intranet services.
However, internal and external emails are working as usual and service has been restored to the GISIS databased, IMODOCS and Virtual Publications.
The IMO says that after the attack was detected its IT technicians shut down key systems to prevent further damage. The organisation is now ‘working with UN IT and security experts to restore systems as soon as possible, to identify the source of the attack, and further enhance security systems to prevent recurrence’.
The news that the IMO has become the latest target of cyber criminals follows the attack against CMA CGM earlier this week. The French container shipping company has since confirmed that the attack has resulted in a data breach.
