Once upon a time – and not so long ago – stateroom technology consisted of little more than a telephone and a TV. Fast-forward to today’s digital age, and coming out of a pandemic that reshaped the industry’s standards, cruise lines are having to redefine stateroom technology.

“Guests, in the post Covid era are increasingly demanding simple yet sophisticated TV and mobile experiences, leaning more towards contactless solutions” said Pantelis Kasimatis, New Business Development Director at MCOMS, a provider of advanced guest facing solutions for multiscreen environments.

Cruise lines should provide at least some level of contactless technology, he says. “If your guest facing technology is outdated, you not only risk losing repeat business, but also may face negative comments on social media and travel websites.”

The benefits of state-of-the-art stateroom technology are many but most of all is the opportunity to create engaging user experiences that increase guest satisfaction while keeping them simple and intuitive. Mobile devices, for example, can enable guests to perform a variety of tasks, from ordering room service to making requests and reservations for the ship's facilities, onboard events and shore activities.

Stateroom technology adds value to the guest stay; and, as such, it provides the potential to generate additional revenue and put the guests at ease of mind. MCOMS’s HOTstream Cruise suite delivers exclusive features including concierge services, live and On Demand Entertainment, guest control over cabin’s temperature and lighting and many more that elevate the onboard experience.

Pantelis Kasimatis says today’s guests are particularly interested in streaming their own content directly onto the stateroom television. HOTstream Cast, the company’s leading-edge gateway solution, allows guests to cast from their personal devices to stateroom TVs without having to download any app or asked to share their personal log-in information. For cruise lines, the solution provides managed access to the cast devices with minimal requirements on existing network infrastructure. For guests, it provides a home environment content streaming experience to watch their own photos, videos and movies on the TV screen.

HOTstream Cruise TV and Mobile solutions enable cruise lines to provide guest interactive services creating opportunities to communicate directly with guests, market their offerings and provide a truly personalized sailing experience. The solutions allow guests to access numerous services and amenities, and comes with an easy to use OMS web-based management tool. MCOMS multiple integrations with 3rd party onboard systems, guarantees a unique array of features, all available on their preferred devices or displays.

Finally for the public displays on the ship, HOTstream Signage is an easy-to-use tool that provides up to date information, wayfinding services and promotions.

As the company celebrates its 20th anniversary in the hospitality market, it is further expanding its reach into the cruise vertical, having partnered with Crystal Cruise Lines to install HOTstream Cruise to their latest expedition ship Endeavor, making it the eighth ship in their fleet that has selected MCOMS solution. In August, the company will be part of one of the most demanding IPTV installations in the world – the 2021 Olympics. This will be the sixth time in a row MCOMS has provided technology to the Olympics.

When asked what sets the company’s solutions apart from other stateroom technology systems, Pantelis Kasimatis quickly cites flexibility. “We’re known for our ability to tailor solutions to reflect the brand’s message,” he said. “And, for cruise lines that want something truly unique, we offer a 100 percent customized user interface specific to their needs.”
