Pepperstone suspended the access of the external service provider after the first attack however it has since been discovered the criminals gained access to customer data for a second time through an "encrypted Pepperstone computer".
Pepperstone was founded in 2010 by Owen Kerr and British business partner Joe Davenport. Mr Kerr, 36, is a member of both the Financial Review Rich List and Young Rich List and has an estimated $538 million net worth.
Customers of the broker have subsequently been approached in a phishing exercise by the cyber crooks purporting to be from another Australian-based trading academy.
The criminals have manipulated carrier services to make the phone calls appear as though they come from the Northern Territory.
Pepperstone said only the customer relationship management database was compromised and financial systems including its online trading platform have not been breached.
The broker said it is in communication with cybercrime agencies and data privacy commissioners worldwide and has recommended customers change their passwords, security questions and configure two-factor authentication.
