ALTON — American Cruise Lines plans to have two new riverboats on the Mississippi River next year.
An agreement with the city of Alton will make the Riverbend area the launch site for several river Mississppi River tours by American Cruise Lines. In addition to its two new boats, the firm plans to have two existing paddlewheelers operating on the Mississippi River in 2021 — America and Queen of the Mississippi — for a total of four boats.
The American Melody is a 175-passenger boat with interiors designed by Studio DADO based in Miami. It is scheduled to join The American Jazz on the Mississippi River this summer.
“Studio DADO has a remarkable ability to blend the sophisticated and the modern,” said said Charles B. Robertson, President and CEO of American Cruise Lines. “Their design vision closely aligned with our mission to provide sophisticated experiences on modern ships.
“American Melody and its sister ships are the biggest step forward in American Cruise Lines design history, but continue to offer the same great experience that has defined us since our founding,” he said in a released statement.
American Melody will be the first American Cruise Lines boat to showcase the new design. It is the 13th new ship in the firm’s rapidly-expanding domestic fleet, and the second new riverboat debuting on the Mississippi for the line in 2021 following American Jazz.

“American’s new interior design concept for our modern riverboats is the next evolution of the series,” said Robertson.
“All the riverboats to come will continue to feature the graceful structural innovations that debuted several years ago with the first few riverboats in the series,” he said. “This includes the patented opening bow and retractable gangway, the glass atriums, and the 100% private-balcony accommodations, that are now standard on all our modern riverboat.”
