Drinking and talking about wine has become a staple of the NBA’s culture.

Trail Blazers shooting guard CJ McCollum even decided to take on winemaking since he has become so passionate about it.

While McCollum joined Maryann Worobiec of Wine Spectator this week for Straight Talk, a chat series on the @wine_spectator Instagram Live, he had a big smile on his face as he confirmed that his first signature wine ‘McCollum Heritage 91’ sold out in 45 minutes.

McCollum partnered with Adelsheim Vineyard in Newberg, OR in producing his inaugural wine, which was harvested in late Sept. of 2018 and then was bottled on Aug. 8, 2019.

But while he set out on creating his own signature wine, he learned a lot from his teammate and wine connoisseur Carmelo Anthony.

“He’s introduced me to some white Burgundies that I was never exposed to before,” McCollum said on the Wine Spectator IG Live.

McCollum wouldn’t call Anthony a wine snob, but…

He’s got a very, very advanced palate. He can blind taste and kind of tell you the type of soil, he can get close to the year -- He’s not a snob, but he’s sophisticated and educated on his wines and when he says he’s going to bring something for a blind tasting, he brings some heat and fire.

Melo has been an avid wine drinker and educator over the years. His YouTube livesteam, ‘What’s In Your Glass’ streams weekly to talk all things wine and current events.

McCollum and Anthony talk wine often.

“I’ve learned a lot from him, he’s learned a lot from me,” McCollum added. “Being out here in Oregon, I’ve been able to introduce him to some of my favorites and kind of expose him to something outside of those Burgundies that he loves so much.”

And hey, maybe, it’s Oregon’s wine that is a factor in helping to keep Melo in Portland.
