The inspector general’s office at the SSA has said that scammers seeking money or personal information from victims have started “creating fake versions of the identification badges most federal employees use to gain access to federal buildings.”
“The badges use government symbols, words, and even names and photos of real people, which are available on government websites or through Internet searches. The scammers may text or email photos of the fake badges to convince potential victims of their legitimacy,” it said in the latest of a series of notices about the ways scammers try to convince people that they are legitimate.
Earlier this year, the IG said impersonators had started sending email containing personal information on real federal employees, including using actual badge numbers of federal law enforcement officers.
The notice once again stresses that the SSA will not suspend a Social Security number because someone else has used it in a crime; threaten anyone with arrest or other legal action unless they immediately pay a fine or fee; require payment by retail gift card, wire transfer, internet currency, or mailing cash; promise a benefit increase or other assistance in exchange for payment; or send official letters or reports containing personal information via email.
Other agencies whose employees most commonly are impersonated include the IRS, DHS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and even the FTC, which investigates such scams. Agencies say that beyond the risk of loss of money or personal information, those scams undercut public confidence in federal employees by making people more skeptical in dealing with the government.
