It can seem counter-intuitive to introduce a new sedan in an automotive market obsessed with SUVs. Kia is clearly not concerned as the new K8 premium sedan is loaded with impressively good looks, a remarkable array of cutting-edge technologies, and a powertrain option for all needs.
Kia K8 | Photo: KiaThe base engine is Kia’s turbocharged 1.6-litre 4-cylinder T-GDI engine. Next up is a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cylinder, and at the top sits two versions of the 3.5-litre V6. The gasoline version with 296 horsepower. Alternatively, it can be fed liquid propane which delivers 237 horsepower. An 8-speed automatic transmission is included with the 2.5- and 3.5-litre engines. The latter, fueled by gasoline, can be fitted with a front-wheel-biased AWD system.
Physically, the K8 borrows familiar Kia design cues however they are uniquely tweaked for the large sedan. The cabin includes an ergonomically-advanced driver’s seat with seven air pockets to alter comfort levels. The seat is actually “smart” as when the Sport drive mode is activated, or when speeds exceed 130km/h, it adjusts various levels of support. Front seats are also heated and cooled while the rear bench a multi-functional fully-connected center armrest featuring a USB charging port.
Kia K8 | Photo: KiaAs far as technology is concerned, the Kia K8 is fitted with a 12-inch digital cluster and a 12-inch infotainment system. The combined curved display is modern and serves as an access point to the included 14-speaker Meridian premium sound system. The Kia K8 is also available with a new 12-inch head-up display.
The new Kia K8 goes on sale next month, starting with the Korean market. It will replace the K7, also known as the Cadenza.
