Welcome This New, Sophisticated American Restaurant to the Heights - Houstonia Magazine

The minds behind the Liberty Kitchen concept have announced their next chapter. Fegen's, which has taken over the former Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar space at 1050 Studewood in the Heights, is scheduled to open this spring.

Fegen's is named for Lance Fegen, chef, owner, and managing partner of the restaurant through F.E.E.D. TX Restaurant Group. He and fellow F.E.E.D. partners Carl Eaves, Will Davis, and Jim Jard birthed Liberty Kitchen in 2011 and sold the brand last year to Culinary Khancepts (State Fare Kitchen & Bar). Per the deal, the team held onto the Heights property with hopes of turning it into something new.

So, what's new? Fegen's will focus on classic American food with some Italian influence. Think entrées like Sunday meatballs, veal, and pork tomato gravy and macaroni; linguine and clam sauce; plus Neapolitan pizza. The bar will have its own late-night presence from Thursday to Saturday, with menu items like cheeseburgers and chowder fries. There will probably be some oysters too. Nicole Meza, formerly of Weights + Measures, will lead the bar and craft cocktails with some Italian influence.

Eaves has totally renovated the space with a color palette of rich reds and greens, plus scalloped booths, dark wood walls, and a chevron-patterned tile floor in the bar area. The idea is sophisticated American with a cozy, neighborhood feel.

"This is a very special place for us," says managing partner Will Davis. "When we sold the Liberty Kitchen brand last year, we knew we had to keep this particular locale; it’s where Liberty Kitchen started; it’s been Lance’s home base for almost a decade, it’s situated in our neighborhood—where we live, and it’s where we’ve always gone with our own friends and family. There’s this longevity to the place. It has positive energy fueled by loads of neighborhood spirit; we’re looking forward to building upon that."

Fegen's will start with dinner service, accepting to-go orders right away. Lunch and brunch will come a few weeks later.
